By
far, roller hockey is one of the fastest growing (and moving!)
sports on the planet. Identical to its twin ice hockey in almost
every way except for the skates, lack of most physical contact,
and playing surface, roller hockey is a fun sport for every age.
Cal Skate is proud to host youth and adult roller hockey leagues
open to boys and girls, men and women of every age and ability.
The youth divisions are divided by age. The defining ages are
decided by the amount of sign-ups. Each team is coached by trained
and qualified adults, practicing one night a week and playing
on the other, usually Mondays and Thursdays. The youngest divisions, the squirts (ages 5 and up),
start the afternoons off after school around 3:50pm, then working
up the age groups to high school-age players finishing by 8:30pm.
Included in the 12 week season are playoffs and a championship
game, with everyones eyes on the coveted Andrew Cup. The youth leagues are played at Cal Skate, but are run and maintained by NVHSC. Their website is www.nvhsc.org.
The
adult divisions include an A, B and a
'C' league. The A league is comprised of seasoned
players using their experience to go for the win in a competitive
league. The 'C' league is an exciting level we just added- it
is for the true beginner hockey player looking for a low-key,
fun way to learn how to play- a perfect first step for the interested
adult player. The B league includes players who might
have a little experience playing or good skaters looking for a
different kind of skating experience. The 'B' league is desogned
for the intermediate roller hockey player, or those out to just
have a good time and a good work-out without all the pressure
of the more competitive A league.
Both
youth and adult leagues have seasons in the fall and spring school
semesters. Both start in September and end in December for the
Fall league, and both start in February and end in May for the
Spring. Durng the summer, we have a combined league of evenly
matched teams, playing for the fun of it, inside air-conditioned
Cal Skate.
